Harlequin Mixed Doubles Tournament

A very strong turn out for the first mixed tournament of the season saw ten valiant men and ten audacious ladies joined in a struggle to the death - well - a game of tennis anyway.

The Harlequin format allowed each player to have five 'sets' (7 games) playing with five different partners and against five different couples. Congratulations to Ian Illingworth for sorting out the order of play and ensuring a smooth running throughout the event.

A fine day and some strong pairings resulted in a very high standard of tennis which was as enjoyable to watch as to play in. At the end of the league stage the two ladies and two men who had accumulated the most number of game wins went through to the final, a short set. (first to six games)

For the ladies Marilyn Almgill and Phillipa Gill tied with 25 games each.
For the men Geoff Bullock achieved 28 games and Adrian Shafeshaft 26 games.

The final itself was a very tense affair, with the fifth game going for over a half dozen deuces.
2-2...3-2....4-2.....not looking so good for Marilyn and Geoff......4-3.....4-4....4-5.....championship point...nooooo...out.
....2nd championship point.......a very generous line call and it is all over.

Marilyn and Geoff take the title by a short head from Adrian and Phillipa.

Thank you to everyone who played and to the spectators who supported them.

Coming soon...the Spring Cup.
